Twilit Majz of Many Generations
Inspiring others to take action is one thing. Helping
lead them into those actions, dealing with the consequences of those actions
– these are very different things! I found myself in the uncomfortable
and unexpected position of being a key player in what was to become a wholehearted
attempt at genocide. Yes, after my little speech, the Organics went nuts.
They now perceived the Purics as a positive threat to their very survival
and post haste began taking steps to obliterate that threat once and for
all.
10,000 years ago as I stood at a computer terminal with
Zygon,
deep in the Puric’s complex I had let the Purics live. I did that to honor
stew meat Pon’s most cherished objective – uniting the Organics and the
Purics. Now, in complete contradiction to the entire thrust of his life,
I was a key reason most of the Purics might eventually be offed. My head
hurt. My chest constricted so tight I could hardly breathe. I hated the
Purics with every fiber of my body for what they had done to Pon, to Zygon,
and for what, once upon a time, they had done to their own mothers. I couldn’t
imagine how a race could condone murdering the entirety of one of its genders.
No reason seemed good enough. They deserved whatever they got!
My chest felt tighter. It was harder to breathe. I ignored
that fact. The chaos and tumult around me was subsiding.
Xexra yelled for
order. She finally got it. Several men approached her. Their strides were
purposeful, their manner methodical. I guessed they must be military.
They were. In fact, as I was to learn later, they were
Pok and Xal, two of the Organics' most able military strategists.
“Speaker, we will retire immediately with our Committees
and draw up plans to achieve the objective of securing our future!” the
being I would come to know as Xal said.
“Do,” Xexra approved. “And take Lora with you. She thinks
in ways none of us think, she does not hesitate to do what must be done
at the exact moment it must be done.”
The two strategists looked a bit confused, turned and
stared at me appraisingly.
Xexra turned and motioned for attention. “Hear me, all
those assembled.”
Indeed, devices projecting the proceedings of the Council
of 15, allowed most of the Organics to bear witness.
“You all know of Pon’s friendship with Lora, this off-worlder,
and how she faced down our enemies just days ago. You know of her courage
in accompanying Pon in his last, successful mission to destroy the genetic
archives of our ancient enemy. What has not been widely known until now,
because there has been no time for a full record of what happened in the
fateful moments when our millennial objective was finally achieved, is
that it was Lora who took full advantage of her position in that moment
to destroy the Harmonizers.”
I would have added that destroying the Harmonizers had
been Zygon’s plan from the beginning, that I had merely agreed to be his
hands, but I didn’t get the chance. The whole place went absolutely nuts
for at least ten riotous minutes. I was hoisted on the tops of shoulders,
passed around the room to be kissed and hugged by all and sundry. I finally
ended up back on my own two feet in front of Pok and Xal who regarded me
with amazement, rapture and wonder.
When the chaos had subsided sufficiently, Xexra continued,
“Yes, the Harmonizers are no more. Our enemies are at our mercy. They can
no longer call upon their chief resource of power and strategy to plague
us, though as we saw recently, they can still inflict grave injury.”
Then she turned back to Pok and Xal. “Do you agree that
one with such initiative and courage will be of value to you as you plan
the final strokes which will secure our future forever?”
They hoisted me on their shoulders and bore me forth from
the room toward their council chambers in answer.
My world had gone completely nuts.
