If you cannot reach,
you cannot teach. No matter what familiar language one uses to communicate,
if Communication is in fact the goal - and not merely to be heard,
voicing opinion, incrementally valid and worthy as it may well be - we
need to learn the language of ‘the other’ that stands before us. Our history
plainly demonstrates that we haven’t yet mastered the art of ‘relating’,
and that we’ve a long way to go in reaching this milestone. Imperative
as it is, this learning of ‘new languages’ is of course a lot like work,
and there are no guarantees. But any labour of love is worth practicing.
As a race, we’ve been known to – are perhaps infamous in The Universe(!)
for choosing a stance and sticking to it - do or die - until something
inevitably comes along to jolt a supposedly unquestionable foundation off
its moorings. And as well, we’ve been notorious for endeavouring to convince
others of that stance, sometimes ‘altruistically’, but far more often out
of defense or disdain. Yet ‘The Guarantee’ is not the issue, really - that
is often purely selfish, pending whether one wishes to claim superiority
in maintaining being “Right”, or victory in actually being listened to…
Perhaps if we weren’t so busy trying to convince one another
of what we perceive as right, usually the “Only Right”, we might finally
begin to see and ‘hear’ - behind each and every face we meet, whether it
is familiar or not, lies another totally unique brand and version of reality,
perception, and truth – based on their own individual experiences. Yep,
about six billion at this time. Just as our own exists…
Whether daunting or exciting, in the end - seeking to
expand the perception of another may not be a ‘bad’ thing, so long as the
initiative includes acknowledging that our own ought move along in a parallel
line!
