Aspects of Being

Gabrielle Perreault

If only we could tell the future - what would we do with this knowledge? It’s worth noting that those with “The Sight”, whose perceptions through the ages have exceeded our supposed ‘common’ abilities, while long having held our fascination, have at the same time often been dismissed, reviled, shunned, and feared. Oracles, prophets, soothsayers, the contemporary “Fortune Teller”, and even ‘ordinary folk’ displaying any precognitive powers: they’ve all been deemed to be as wise as insane, as gifted as possessed, Divine as Evil, performing the Devil’s own work, or touched by the Hand of God. Nor were they often listened to, though they have always been among us, possessing astounding as well as horrific insights. Is it that we only listen to what we wish to hear? For it has often been said, even by these very folk, that we are able to change the future…that we possess free will.

To be sure, the gift of guidance is nothing to be shunned or dismissed. Yet to seek ‘guidance’ is not at all the same as expecting the immediate manifestation of answers. However, we are convinced we would then be assured and at peace. Would we be? Imagine sitting at Nostradamus’ breakfast table, or being the first editor of The Book of Revelations! It’s been said that History repeats itself, yet even in this notion we don’t generally heed the gift that plainly presents itself. Many of us often rather seek out some instant or inexplicable brand of ‘magic’, revering those whom we call gifted, consulting them in order to see beyond our doubts and questions. But perhaps the true gift lies in the questioning itself…the blessing being that we are aware that there is indeed more.

Yet the attraction of “The Answer”, in so many forms, has remained as we’ve longed to grasp what lies beyond our eyes, seeking the Big Revelation. What would we in fact do with it?

In truth, we all possess varying endowments of these gifts ourselves, though we often ignore our own insights, the “little voice”, Intuition, our own second sight. Not only are we not taught to investigate, trust, and hone them, but we often look to someone outside of us, to validate, express, to reveal the answers to our fears and tribulations. When did we last listen to that voice inside ourselves? All too frequently we relinquish our own power, undiscovered, not marking the path we travel, but expecting someone else to find our destination for us.

I can ask for help without feeling shame,
knowing that another’s insight
and encouragement
can lead me to uncover
my own wisdom and strength,
though it may never replace it.
So possessing my own brand of wisdom and strength,
it is up to me to rely on and use these gifts well.
I will not sacrifice these cherished gifts to anyone,
especially those that cannot
or will not appreciate them as I do
