Aspects of Being
Do you have a dream, a wish, a secret hope? - Some part of your life's plan that has yet to be fulfilled? How do you make it come true? Is it a pleasant daydream, or is it a workable goal - and whom does it benefit.... And as much as any these things, do you in fact know why you wish it? If we actually take the opportunity to look at 'why' we wish for something, it can help eliminate that which may only succeed in disappointing us. That precious sense of 'worthiness' ought not have to come from ever-changing cultural dictates and whims, thought we accept them often enough. If it amounts to justification and acknowledgement from The Outside it can indeed be a shallow victory, while much energy has been expended. Truly we are a goal-oriented lot (born or bred - Nature or Nurture), and it can be difficult to escape our media and culture's lure of what 'appears' to grant us a touted measure of supposed success. The longed-for sense of triumph becomes short-lived when it does not succeed in bringing us peace, and so we enthusiastically turn our attention towards setting yet another goal, never fully realizing why the satisfaction has seemingly eluded us. Either that or we wallow in feelings of bitterness, shortcomings, and incompetence! All one need do is pay a modicum of attention to ads for the "Bigger, Better, Healthier, New & Improved, State of the Art" item, location, or philosophy - "Satisfaction Guaranteed"! As if someone else outside of us should know what our heart's desire is! We are vulnerable when we do not possess this knowledge ourselves.... Whether it's in seeking True Love, the Perfect Body, the Dream Home, the Ideal Job, or winning the lottery and being set for life, or any other schemes that drive our supposed Free Market, catering to the dreams that others have instilled, we are the ones that become the prisoners. Love grows, changes, and can deepen into something unforeseen, bodies get old with time, dream homes eventually need repairs, jobs get downsized, lotteries are taxed (and your supposedly long-lost uncle may show up to stay!). Have a sweet smile at these dreams! They are but petulant children! What do you really want? And who told you what to wish for.... There are many dreams.
At the end of your days, what will you count as "Success"?
