Aspects of Being

Gabrielle Perreault

Have you ever examined the fascinating notion of "impulse"? It seems to be what forever make us 'tick', wouldn't you say? It falls under many categories and has several synonyms. When embraced, it can manifest itself in passion, motivation, inspiration, will, and perseverance. It can turn the key to formerly unopened doors, and it can move mountains - not to mention that 'motivation' it is highly prized by our culture. An 'impulse' can also be heeded in regards to intuition. Somehow, it seems magical.

Yet now look at the word "impulsive" The connotation quickly changes as it turns from a compelling 'vehicle' into descriptions such as "emotional, rash, heedless, vehement, hot, and impetuous". How is it that a word that implies being driven, which we regard as ideal, can in a slightly different form mean something negative.... Words, huh?

An impulse is a spark of energy, no matter where it comes from, inside of us as well as around. But maybe it's the 'spirit' of that energy that begs to be looked at - that is, how we each make use of it. A baby's cry is an impulse - it's a built-in mechanism for survival. Any parent up 5 times in the night with a newborn knows that it works. However, when the child becomes older, he learns to express his needs and wishes in other ways.

An impulse is as simple a thing as when we look up from our work-desk and stare out a window, mesmerized by a lovely cloud formation. An impulse is when, without thinking, we pick up the phone and call someone who's been out of touch for a while and it turns out they really needed to hear our voice. Impulse is when your honey buys you flowers on the way home, just because they thought of you today - but of course if they have no money, does that make them impulsive? Remember the spirit of the energy. Impulse is the trigger that gives life to our thoughts and feelings on their way to fruition, whether it is an idea or an endeavour. However, these can get us into trouble if we have not discerned the difference between what constitutes impulse and 'impulsiveness".

Impulse is when we look up and outside of our daily lives, into the world, and see what Impulsiveness has wreaked. In all that we do, create, feel and think, here are two words that perhaps best clearly define where our pitfalls may occur. Words, huh?

I pray when this journey
comes to an end
that I'll have been brave
as I followed my course,
and that I will surely have
earned my own trust ~
and sought secret stars
without remorse....
