Aspects of Being
See the guy sitting across from you on the bus? Apparently he swallowed a Black Hole at last night's supper judging by the scowl he holds fast, looking like it's etched in. No one ever told him he could do better, than to shun the world by the lack of invitation on his face. He's going home to another night of slamming the door on the world, 'cause no one ever asked him in. Bet no one ever told him he was Good enough. For anything. Will you? Or will you judge him.... See that guy walking down the sidewalk, talking to himself? Having quite a lively conversation too! Wouldn't you just love to know. Or do you care? If you have to go to where he's at, do you cross the street at the last second possible? What scares you - that he hears and sees things that you don't? He's schizophrenic - and there's only one of him, actually - and he may have gone off his meds, "cause y'know, brother, some of them side-effects are like nails on a chalkboard". And by the way, Astronomers and Micro Biologists also see and hear things that you do not. And no, they can't just "put 'em all away" - for as we all know, there's NEVER enough funding for Astronomers and Micro Biologists! See 'the sister' selling her body alongside the Whitebread? Care for "the Exotic" do you? Who taught you that was so - her family's been here for a few hundred years! Do you care that many of these little women came to The Street because it was less dangerous than their former homes? Do you know how many belonged to folks who would sell their souls to find out where their beloved daughters are.... See the unruly immigrant family at the check-out line - counting and arguing, holding everybody up - especially frustrating for the Man because Women aren't supposed to do that, let alone in public! She also knows that she is shaming her husband. But he just got laid off from the Seven-Eleven, and there are six mouths to feed. Why didn't they just "stay where they were"? Why don't they "just go BACK"?! It's simple, really. They would all be dead. See the young unwed mother who gave her body away for but a few minutes (it felt so good to be held - to feel loved), 'cause she didn't think she even had a soul - Isn't that only for Good People?
