In childhood most of
us laughed and played. We now call it "childish", but who is not moved
by the sound of laughter - this while we gaze wistfully and begrudgingly
at young ones and think, "Look how easy they have it!". But it wasn't about
being silly. It was an exercise in being freely moved by the joy of Imagination
and of the Present Moment!
We would have done
well to hang on to and nurture these precious gifts, but in this work-a-day-world,
we've sadly had it trained out of us with words like "Grow Up!" and "Get
Serious!!" still ringing in our ears. We are beset with worries and trials
that demand our attention. So....isn't it ironic that the things that might
truly help us are dismissed as "silly"? As adults, in this regard, we often
seem to confuse being serious with acting wisely. Likewise with Creativity,
we use it to solve problems whether we realize it or not! Yet, it also
is otherwise dismissed as "frivolous", as if it had no other part to play....
If you've ever had
a good rolling belly laugh watching a great comedian (and keep in mind
that most of them have had challenging lives), or played with a child for
an hour (who reaches so easily into your own being), you will remember
that you're not on the outside of anything. You become part of Something
Else for that time. Those are the moments that alter and "cleanse" your
perspective. When you find you don't have to remind yourself to breathe
deeply, then you know you've got it right!
~ A Buddhist Monk walks
up to a New York City hot dog vendor and says, "Make me one with everything".
The Monk hands the vendor a $20 bill. The vendor puts
the bill into his pocket. When the Monk inquires about his change, the
vendor replies, "Change must come from within!". (1)
