Aspects of Being

Gabrielle Perreault

I once mentioned to someone that many of our lives are sometimes, sadly, like a boatload of tourists taking a magnificent Alaskan Cruise. But instead of drinking in the pristine beauty, wonder, and ageless mystery, we stay below deck because there's a buffet with All-You-Can-Eat Shrimp! And many of us would say we had a great time (unless they happened to run out of Shrimp - and suddenly the Universe collapses!).

We possess five senses. We rely on them as much as we take them for granted! We miss so many things, even with the potential they grant us, for we insist that the "proof" that lies before our eyes in any given moment is sufficient unto itself. Layers upon layers of undiscovered meaning and revelation escape us by this, our stubborn insistence. Not surprisingly, the notion of the supposed "safety" of remaining in our own microcosm is constantly challenged, and this leaves us perplexed and bewildered. This is naught but an invitation from The Universe!

There are others who are born without, or lose one or more of these five senses. No more are they taken for granted. And yet the gift of the "sixth" can make their journey as rich or richer than anything we can conceive of or may experience ourselves. Whether we call it Knowing, enlightenment, heightened awareness, guidance, compensation, or a triumph of the Human Spirit, this is The Universe touching those others. They have "allowed" it". We others cannot see it, taste it, or touch it. Yet the Deaf may hear with their bodies. The Blind see with their hands. Illness can awaken appreciation. Trouble can teach. Sorrow can make Laughter sweeter. Loss makes everything precious. Pain can teach us our limits, or to transcend them!

It is only the closed mind and heart that truly suffer when the beckoning call goes unheeded.....

Like the seed
must push through the dark earth,
drawn and compelled towards the Light ~
So do we struggle.

Like the leaf
clings to the branch of the tree,
fearing to be blown out into the four winds ~
So must we let go.

Like the Sun
leaves us each day in darkness
as we turn in this cosmic dance ~
So can we trust its faithful return....
